How do we find the strength to keep going when something seems impossible?
ParaMana Puppet Theatre presents “The Girl Who Wanted to Touch the Crescent Moon”, a poetic audiovisual performance of Contemporary Experimental Shadow & Object Theatre for children aged 5–12 and their families.
Based on an adaptation of the Japanese folktale Tsuki No Waguma – The Crescent Moon Bear, featured in Clarissa Pinkola Estés’ book Women Who Run with the Wolves, the performance follows the symbolic journey of a young girl whose father returns from war profoundly changed. In an attempt to find her way back to him, she embarks on a seemingly impossible quest that tests her patience, perseverance, and faith, gradually transforming her as well.
War is the starting point of the story, but not its destination. Through the relationship between a child and her father, the performance explores the experiences that change us, difficult emotions, and emotional resilience, as well as our ability to discover new ways of connecting with the people we love.
What do we see when we look again?
On the ParaMana stage, images are created and transformed live before the audience. The angle of the projected light, distance, and the position from which we look all alter what we see, playing with the boundaries between perception and illusion.
What happens when we shift our point of view? When we try to see what is in front of us from more than one perspective?
Perhaps transformation begins precisely there: in our ability to multiply our perspectives, question what we once believed to be certain, and make room for what, until then, had seemed impossible.
Three-dimensional shadow worlds, handcrafted miniatures and large-scale analogue projections, objects, mirrors, prisms, light, the human body, and original electroacoustic soundscapes come together to create a world that is born and continuously transformed before the children’s eyes.
In contrast to the rapid succession of images that shapes our everyday lives, ParaMana embraces slowness as a practice of attention: time to observe, to listen, to connect, and to be truly present.
After the performance, children and adults are invited onto the stage. They encounter the constructions up close, try out the techniques, and experiment with light, shadow, and objects, crossing over to the other side of the image.
